Ian Lee Evaluate Manufacturing of Carbon Fiber Working on Carbon fiber parts is currently not allowed due to unwarranted historic concerns. Working on cured Carbon fiber parts is currently not allowed. Discussion years ago that led to this ban focused on the danger of Carbon Fiber dust.
Carbon fiber dust does, in fact, pose a health risk. But so does most of our other dust making processes at DMS. For example:
  • Sanding and lathe Dust from exotic woods in the woodshop can cause severe allergic reactions, and if inhaled can cause lung issues.
  • Working on exotic woods in general can aerosolize oils that can pose lung issues.
  • Grinding in metal shop can produce micro metallic dust which can be inhaled
  • Silica from dried pottery clay can be inhaled and directly cause silicosis
  • Overheated cutting fluid from machine shop aerosolizes and can be irritating to lungs
  • Any of the various chemicals that are used for cleaning, and general work, from resins, to finishing products, to brake cleaner, and so on all produce inhalation hazards.
  • And so on

Simply put, any maker should be cognizant that the processes to make things poses dangers, dust poses dangers, chemicals pose dangers, and caution when working on parts should always be taken. Likewise, working at the space where these processes are underway must be accepted and understood in general.
The same general rules must, however, apply: cleaning after oneself to reduce the risk to others is paramount for carbon fiber, just as it is for clay, grinding, or woodwork.
I’m encouraging the board to reconsider this unfounded ban, and instead encourage making cool stuff, use of self provided proper appropriate PPE for all work, and cleaning after oneself.
Tabled - Jack to create and lead group to research safety standards and present an agenda item and recommendations to the board.
Let’s make cool stuff and not ban a material or process due to unfounded fears. no
Jay Phelps Create an automated method to request voting rights The only approach today is manual and does not scale https://source.dallasmakerspace.org/display/RULES/Rules+and+Policies#RulesandPolicies-VotingRights
- The listed approach under item #3 via email isn't reliable nor does it scale. - The common approach today of an account system ticket isn't listed but has been used for years and also doesn't scale.
Validation today is a manual process requiring WHMCS access and the number of volunteers who are willing and able to do that work is tiny. To support item #5, a purge of voting roles each year will require automation.
IT will create a web page, accessible to logged in users (validation) that will allow them to validate they are a primary account user (not an add on) and meet the active for past 90+ days rule. If so a button press will sign them up for voting rights which equates to being added to the AD group 'Voting Rights'.
CTO will be responsible for purging the Voting Rights AD group each cycle as part of the BOD transition checklist I created last year.
It's not specified but IT suggests we also undertake purging AD Voting Rights regularly with a batch job that will check for lapses; i.e. folks who should have those rights removed because they failed to keep their membership active.
Jack motion to approve creating a system but not to take it live until future approval. Thomas second. Unanimous - motion PASSED.
Support of Bylaws and improvements in Voting Rights cleanup no
Kobin Caddick Increase Science fume hood budget from $15k to $19k for full stainless steel ductwork and new roof penetration Existing epoxy coated galvanized ductwork is not up to code, will need modification and new 10" elbows, and it's unknown what kind of epoxy was used $4,053.00 Blower motor, Mounting Rails & Zero-Static Exhaust Stack (MGC, Inc.) $8,430.00 Install the roof fan; cut new roof penetration for 10" ductwork; install full 22-gauge 304 stainless ductwork with collar, backdraft preventer, and isolation damper (RDRC Mechanical contractors) $2,296.00 Roofer (Empire Roofing) $2,829.24 Electrical work (White Electric) $ 675.00 Roof curb to mount the fan (United Team Mechanical) $ 76.50 Permit fee (City of Carrollton) ----- Total: $18,359.74 Lead time: 10 days for stainless ductwork

I propose to increase the budget to $19,000 to account for any incidentals. If that's not possible, increasing to the actual quoted cost of $18,359.74 will allow us to build the fume hood ductwork right the first time.
We would like to build the fume hood ductwork right and up to code the first time so we can get some chemistry related classes on the calendar and start two different member's projects. no Jack Smith Julie Harris Thomas Fagan, Julie Harris, Jack Smith, John Fabrycki, Jayson Woods

Randy Lisbona Denton Day of the Dead Soapbox Derby entry We don't have a suitable vehicle to enter but have the people, skills, and tools to build one. Denton has a Day of the Dead Halloween soap box derby race. Registration opens May 5 at noon, I've talked to a enough people to know we could build a vehicle. Would like to get as many committees as possible to contribute to construction, like glass hood ornament, Leather steering, vacuum formed windshield. Guessing $1,000 materials, maybe more. Could require additional funding as the design gets finalized. Main rules are coffin themed, 12' max length, unpowered but can have a single pusher to start the race, working brakes.

Max Locke Adjustment to the BOD voting window Ballots for the BOD election went out a little late and the close date for voting was maintained, shorting the voting window Board to discuss and confirm ending voting date and shortened voting window
Board discussed and decided to leave deadlines as is because the election will be primarily determined with online voting. It was noted that extending the due date might be an issue for in person voters and since we do not mail ballots anymore it wasn't necessary to extend the due date. A board member will post on Talk.
Member satisfaction regarding an open and fair voting process. no
