Miller Multimatic 255 The Hobart Handler 210 is performing poorly and needs to be replaced In the committee meting fo 07/10/21 the subject of the poor performance of the Hobart Handler 210 was raised. It was determined by R. Lisbona that the device was a unit designed to run on 230V AC and worked correctly with that supply voltage. It did not, however, work correctly on the 208 VAC available at DMS. It was decided that a replacement be investigated.
The metal shop has three welders manufactured by Miller. It was decided to restrict the search to Miller products for reasons of interoperability and maintenance. Jim Kreter was tasked with the research. He provided three options with quotations from our supplier, Metroplex Welding. Because of delays in the process a subsequent quotation was obtained and the committee approval for expenditure increased to $8000.
DMS is supposed to be an educational institution. I believe that the addition of this equipment expands our capability to teach to a considerably higher level. The addition of the AluminaPro push pull gun permits MIG welding of aluminum and additionally MIG brazing.
One of the comments against getting a multiprocess machine is it will be too difficult for our membership to use. The chairs disagree…The Autoset Elite feature actually makes it easier to use than our existing MIG welder since the user just has to set the material thickness and filler wire diameter. In TIG mode the users sets the material and tungsten diameter. And the auto settings can be easily tweaked or disabled or the machine run with manual settings like our existing TIG and MIG welders. The multiprocess capability will be a huge benefit during classes since we can use the new Multimatic 255 as a MIG or DC TIG welder (99% of our TIG users do DC TIG) Increasing the instructor led machine time available for the students during the class. (There are typically a few students who need one on one time, the rest get the hang of it quickly and just need occasional feedback on their technique from the instructor). The push-pull gun included in the package will also allow our users to MIG aluminum, a capability few home shops have, increasing the value of becoming a Makerspace member. (will require a separate class due to needing to change out the wire, tips, and gas for Aluminum welding) I think having a push pull gun will drive more interest in welding aluminum. Consequently I feel it will give us another feather in our proverbial hat to welding capabilities. It is easier for us to get it in a single purchase vs another secondary purchase afterwards.
This equipment expands our ability to teach to a considerably higher level. no Justin Walker James Henningson Justin Walker, James Henningson, Julie Harris, Terra Baker
