We elected a new chairman for the committee. Nicholas Brown, who is Joe’s son, has agreed to take over his father’s responsibilities as chair. He’s a very enthusiast new chair. Dan Henderson was made vice chair again.

The committee was successful at getting a new flatter die for the hydraulic press. They also have kept the shop very clean. Several classes have taken place this month, too.

Knife making tools - Joe Brown donated his knife making jig. Other tools are needed such as specialized tongs and are being researched. Knife making is a very highly interesting subject for DMS members.

Other hardy tools -three hot cuts, spring fuller, swage block,. leaf die, v-block for forge welding, bending forks. Suggested we put in an order from Blacksmithdepot.com. Bending fork,

Steel canister vacuum. The shop desperately needs cleaning and vacuuming. Approved Vacuum purchase from Lowes.

Install a new lock on the cabinet as the one’s there are pretty undependable. (Joe will buy one this week and install)

Considering getting lockboxes for the grinder, wirewheel, and forges.

Joe is planning to teach a basic DAMASCUS steel class. Due to his recent stroke it will likely be at least six months before he can teach the class. The cost is going to be between $100 and $150. It will be a two day class.

Mark Aspery, who is one of the authors of the ABANA National Curriculum, is going to be at DMS in October. On October 4th-7th. He will split his time between DMS and NTBA. He will give a demo at Brookhaven College on Saturday. He will teach a Gate Latch class on October 4th. It will be $150. There will be 12 students per class each day. Total proceeds from tuition will be $150x12x3 or $5400. We estimated that there will be costs of $2000. $450 a day for Mr. Aspery and materials and propane. The remaining $3400 will be split between DMS and the North Texas Blacksmithing Association. We require 12 Anvils, 6 forges, 12 sets of tongs and at least 12 hammers for these classes. Many of the students will have their own tongs and hammers. We will provide 5 of the anvils and at least two forges, possibly more.
